GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. — A routine traffic stop turned violent last week when a driver was attacked with an ax following a road rage confrontation, according to police.
The incident happened just before 2 p.m. on April 14 near the intersection of Woodmere Avenue and Hannah Avenue. Authorities say a 74-year-old man was stopped at a red light and chose not to turn right, a legal option under Michigan traffic law.
Police said a 70-year-old man driving behind him became upset and began following the victim after the light changed. Both drivers later stopped near the Traverse Area District Library, where the situation escalated.
According to investigators, the suspect approached the victim after he exited his vehicle and struck him in the left upper arm with an ax.
Despite the attack, the victim was able to drive himself to a nearby hospital. His injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
The suspect left the scene but was later located and arrested at his home. He is facing a felony charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm.
Authorities say the incident is an example of how quickly road rage can escalate into serious violence. The case remains under investigation.
