Traverse City, MI — An incident involving an eighth-grade student bringing marijuana edibles to East Middle School
From the Traverse City Police Department Dispatch Files- Incident occurred on January 5th 2026
Edibles Pose Unique Challenges in Schools
Unlike traditional marijuana products, edibles are often designed to look like gummies, chocolates, or baked goods, making them easy to conceal and difficult for staff to detect. School officials say that packaging can closely resemble popular candy brands, increasing the risk of accidental consumption.
“Edibles are especially concerning because students may not understand the delayed and intensified effects,” said a local school resource officer. “A student can consume them thinking nothing will happen, and then suddenly feel overwhelmed during class.”
Growing Accessibility for Youth
While marijuana remains illegal for minors in Michigan, educators say students are increasingly obtaining edibles from older siblings, friends, or unsecured products at home. The rise of legalized recreational marijuana has shifted the challenge from street-level drugs to items that are readily available and often improperly stored.
Health officials warn that edibles can contain high levels of THC, and even small amounts can cause anxiety, dizziness, nausea, and impaired judgment in adolescents.
