Special Olympics Michigan 2026 Winter Games Bring Athletes and Families to Northern Michigan

The 2026 Special Olympics Michigan Winter Games are underway in the Grand Traverse area, drawing hundreds of athletes, coaches, families, and volunteers from across the state for several days of competition, camaraderie, and celebration.
Organized by Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI), the State Winter Games are scheduled to take place January 27–30, 2026, featuring a range of winter sports and activities designed to showcase athletic excellence and inclusive competition for people with intellectual disabilities.

These venues were selected for their varied facilities and ability to host a broad range of sports, making northern Michigan an ideal winter destination for the event.

According to community participants and organizers, more than 800 athletes have traveled to compete, bringing energy and enthusiasm to the week’s activities. From figure skating to snowshoeing and other winter sports, the Games celebrate inclusivity and athletic achievement.
One athlete, who has been competing with Special Olympics Michigan for nearly a decade, expressed excitement about the opportunity to compete and connect with fellow athletes at this year’s Winter Games.
The event is free for participants and supported by community fundraising and volunteers, reinforcing the state-wide commitment to providing accessible athletic opportunities for all.
