Traverse City, Mich. — A Traverse City man is facing serious felony charges after authorities say he forced his way into Old Mission Peninsula School using a hammer, triggering a lockdown and a rapid law enforcement response.
The incident happened Monday morning, Feb. 9, when deputies with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office were called to the school at approximately 9:36 a.m. after reports of a man attempting to break into the building.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Isaiah Moger, repeatedly struck the locked main entrance with a hammer, shattering glass panels in order to gain entry. After breaking through the front doors, he allegedly continued damaging additional glass inside the school.
Students and staff were placed under lockdown as deputies and other responding officers rushed to secure the building. Authorities say Moger was taken into custody in the school lobby within about seven minutes of the initial emergency call.
No injuries were reported, and officials credited school staff and law enforcement for acting quickly to ensure student safety.
Moger was arrested and booked into the Grand Traverse County Jail. Prosecutors have charged him with false report or threat of terrorism and malicious destruction of property, with damages estimated between $1,000 and $20,000.
A judge set Moger’s bond at $1 million, reflecting the seriousness of the alleged break-in at a school building.
Court records indicate a probable cause hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24, followed by a preliminary hearing on March 3.
Authorities have not released a motive for the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing with assistance from the Michigan State Police and local law enforcement agencies.
Officials are urging anyone with additional information about the case to contact the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.
