Traverse City, Mich. — The smell of simmering spices, slow-cooked beef, and secret family recipes will fill Orchard Church later this month as the community gathers for an afternoon of food, fellowship, and fundraising at the Restoring Hope Chili Cook-Off.
Scheduled for February 28 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Orchard Church, 3903 Voice Road, the event invites residents of all ages to come together for a flavorful competition designed to strengthen community ties while supporting a meaningful cause.
Organizers say the cook-off is about more than just chili — it’s about bringing people together during the winter months for connection, generosity, and a little friendly rivalry.
A Taste of Community Spirit
For just $5 per person, attendees can sample a variety of chili entries and enjoy a full bowl of their favorite selection. Children ages five and under are admitted free, making it an affordable family-friendly outing.
Event organizers are expecting a range of chili styles, from traditional beef recipes to creative twists featuring unique ingredients and bold spice profiles.
“Everyone thinks their chili is the best,” one organizer joked. “This is the chance to prove it.”
Participants will have the opportunity to taste, vote, and enjoy the warm atmosphere of a community event centered around comfort food during the heart of winter.
Competition Heats Up
Those looking to compete can register to enter their chili for a $25 entry fee, which requires contestants to prepare two gallons of chili for sampling.
Organizers say the event is open to amateur cooks, seasoned home chefs, and anyone confident enough in their recipe to go head-to-head with local competition.
The winning chili will receive a prize donated by ABC Warehouse, adding a little extra incentive for competitors to bring their A-game.
To register, participants must text Bill McNally at 231-886-0354. (Text only.)
More Than Just Chili
In addition to the tasting competition, the event will also feature a silent auction, offering attendees the chance to bid on donated items while supporting Restoring Hope’s mission.
While organizers have not publicly detailed every auction item yet, they say community donations and local business support have helped build a strong lineup of prizes.
The silent auction provides an additional opportunity for guests to contribute to the cause beyond the admission fee, turning an afternoon of food into tangible support for those in need.
Supporting Restoring Hope
Proceeds from the event will benefit Restoring Hope, an initiative focused on strengthening individuals and families through outreach and community support. Organizers say events like the chili cook-off are designed to create sustainable ways to fund programming while building deeper connections among residents.
“This isn’t just about raising money,” organizers said. “It’s about building relationships, encouraging generosity, and reminding people that hope grows when communities come together.”
A Winter Tradition in the Making?
Community chili cook-offs have become a popular way for churches and nonprofits to combine fun and fundraising. With low admission costs, friendly competition, and wide appeal, these events often draw large crowds — especially during Northern Michigan’s long winter season.
Organizers say they hope the Restoring Hope Chili Cook-Off becomes an annual tradition.
“We want people to leave full — not just from the food, but from the sense of connection,” one organizer said.
With affordable admission, family-friendly fun, competitive cooking, and a charitable purpose, the February 28 event promises to deliver warmth in more ways than one.
