Deadly Shooting in Benzie County Under Investigation

BEULAH, Mich. — A quiet Benzie County community is now at the center of a developing investigation after a man was found dead inside a Thompsonville home late Saturday night.

Authorities say deputies with the Benzie County Sheriff’s Office were called around 9:20 p.m. on March 29 to a residence in the 14000 block of Hall Avenue following reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they discovered a 38-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound inside the home

According to officials, a 66-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene, though he was initially arrested on unrelated charges. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether he will face charges directly tied to the shooting.

Known relationship, but unanswered questions

Early findings suggest the two men knew each other, pointing investigators away from the possibility of a random act of violence. Authorities have emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public, reinforcing the belief that the incident was isolated.

Still, key details remain unclear. Law enforcement has not released:

  • The identity of the victim
  • A confirmed motive
  • The exact circumstances leading up to the shooting

Multi-agency response

The investigation has drawn support from multiple agencies, including:

  • Michigan State Police (Traverse City Post)
  • Michigan State Police Crime Lab (Gaylord)
  • Local EMS units

Officials say deputies and troopers worked through the night processing the scene and conducting interviews, underscoring the seriousness and complexity of the case.

What happens next

The case remains active, and once investigators complete their work, findings will be forwarded to the Benzie County Prosecutor’s Office for review and potential charges.

Sheriff’s officials are also asking anyone with information to come forward as they continue piecing together what led to the fatal shooting.

A community shaken

Benzie County, home to fewer than 20,000 residents, is typically known for its quiet towns, lakes, and rural character. Incidents like this are rare, making the shooting particularly jarring for residents in and around Thompsonville.

For now, the investigation continues — and with it, a community waits for answers about what happened inside that Hall Avenue home.
