Gerald Ford was stopped by a herd of cattle crossing the road
On July 12, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford — a Michigan native — came to Traverse City to participate in the National Cherry Festival and other local events. After the festival parade and a visit with local dignitaries, Ford’s motorcade was leaving the area in route back to Chicago.
As the presidential motorcade was on the road, a herd of cattle from a local farm (Gallagher’s Centennial Farm) needed to cross the road ahead. Rather than rush through, the motorcade — and thus the President’s departure — was delayed while the cows crossed safely (see photo here)
