The tunnels beneath the former Traverse City State Hospital still exist


Built in the late 1800s, the hospital used an underground tunnel system to quietly move patients, staff, supplies — and bodies — between buildings during harsh winters. Even after the hospital closed in 1989, workers reported hearing footsteps, voices, and doors opening in sections of the tunnels that were sealed and unlit. Some maintenance staff refused to work alone down there.
