First Baby of 2026 Welcomed in Northern Michigan
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — A beautiful start to 2026 was marked early Thursday morning as Matthew Molloseau and Corey Payberg welcomed their daughter, the first baby born in Northern Michigan this year.
The baby girl arrived at 12:51 a.m. on January 1, 2026, just minutes into the New Year, making her the region’s first newborn of the year. Parents Molloseau and Payberg told hospital staff they weren’t expecting to ring in 2026 with a delivery, but the surprise was a welcome one for their growing family.
Hospital employees celebrated the special moment with the family, marking the occasion as a moment of hope and new beginnings for the community. Despite arriving earlier than expected, the baby and parents are reported to be doing well as they settle into life as a family of four.
The first birth of a new year often symbolizes fresh starts, and this joyful arrival set a heartwarming tone for the first day of 2026 in Northern Michigan.
