New Neighborhood Proposal Brings Fresh Opportunity to Grawn

GRAWN, Mich. — A new residential development project could bring welcome growth and vitality to the heart of Grawn, reconnecting the community with its historic roots while addressing local housing needs. The Ticker | Traverse City News & Events

Rob and Kate Mead of RK Mead Investments LLC have formally submitted plans for a project called The Village of Blackwood, named after Grawn’s original 19th-century identity when the community was first settled as Blackwood in the 1870s. The site sits in a triangular area near CR-633, Brooks Street, and State Street, encompassing multiple properties that the Meads have been assembling for the development. Under the proposal, the Meads plan to build 38 for-sale homes, geared toward first-time buyers and others seeking affordable homeownership close to family and community amenities. The homes are designed to be two-story units with attached garages, storage space, and common drives connecting to nearby streets. The Ticker | Traverse City News & Events

In addition to housing, the project includes community-oriented features such as a fenced dog park, ample landscaping, and an onsite BATA bus stop to provide residents with convenient transit options. Shared maintenance and landscaping costs will be handled through a condo association. The Ticker | Traverse City News & Events

One especially meaningful aspect of the plan is the envisioned revitalization of a historic barn from the original Blackwood village. The Meads hope to relocate and restore the structure for use as a coffee shop and bakery, creating space for community gathering and even employment opportunities for adults with special needs. Township officials are welcoming the proposal, noting that housing development has been a missing piece in Grawn’s recent growth. Blair Township Supervisor Nicole Blonshine has stated that the plan aligns with broader community goals and could be a key part of the area’s continued economic progress. Opinion: A Boost for Community and Identity

This development is a great step forward for Grawn. With thoughtfully designed homes, community space, historic preservation, and walkable features, The Village of Blackwood will not only provide much-needed attainable housing but also help restore a sense of place and pride in this historic community. Projects like this can strengthen bonds among residents, support local schools, and spark further investment in the township’s future.
