TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Just as Northern Michigan residents were beginning to enjoy a stretch of milder weather, Friday’s changing conditions brought winter driving concerns back in full force.
The day began with steady rain across the Traverse City area, creating wet roadways and melting much of the remaining snow. But by late afternoon and into the evening, temperatures dropped and precipitation shifted from rain to moderate and at times heavy snowfall.
As the snow intensified, slush quickly formed on road surfaces, creating slick and hazardous driving conditions. The combination of lingering rainwater and accumulating snow made for especially slippery stretches, particularly on bridges, intersections, and less-traveled roads.
Drivers reported reduced visibility during heavier bursts of snow, along with difficult traction as slush built up across lanes. The rapid shift in conditions caught some motorists off guard, especially after recent days of improving weather had created a sense that winter’s worst might be easing.
Local authorities are reminding drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time when conditions change quickly. Even brief temperature drops can turn wet pavement into icy or slushy hazards within a short period.
As always, motorists are encouraged to check local weather updates before traveling and remain cautious during evening and overnight hours when surfaces can refreeze.
We’ll continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
